Work Package 4 is particularly relevant to the issue of digitalization: it specifically aims to increase the support services for Research & Development in Information and Communication technologies through the Free Software Lab.
In the Free Software Lab research and innovation activities meet the needs of local companies and SMEs, who can profit from years of consolidated experience in free software development already present in the South Tyrolean territory.
The Free Software Lab will specialise in two main fields: 1) Open Source database: where the main target is to foster the use of databases running on open source technology like Postgres, for which there is already good expertise in the South Tyrolean territory; and 2) SMART technologies: over the past years South Tyrol has been at the centre of many initiatives for smart solutions in different aspects of society, like mobility. Together, the Free Software Lab and the Smart Technologies initiative could develop important synergies, drawing from each others’ experience.
The Free Sofware Lab is also home to the ICT acceleration programme involving both creative and digital industries: it helps digital and creative SMEs to transform an idea into a business. This will make the companies more competitive and give them the opportunity to develop new products and innovative solutions, which in turn will have an impact on economy and attract more highly skilled work force.
